Monday 11/22 and Tuesday 11/23/21
Please read all of the below carefully.
Use the MLA Sample Paper as a
template for your rough draft and final
paper. It can be found in the Writing
Project Overview, Guidelines, and
Resources module on your section
Canvas site.
In the Rough Draft and Rough Draft
Workshop, you’ll test out the
argument you’ve been developing in
the Writing Forum over the course of
the quarter on an audience of your
peers. The purpose of this assignment
is to help you produce your best work
for the Final Paper by completing the
following 4 tasks:
â— Write a complete (minimum)
1000-1250-word (+ Works
Cited) rough draft of your
paper
â— Ask your peers for feedback
◠Read your peers’ drafts and
provide written feedback
based on their Dear Reader
letters and in-text comments
â— Participate in the peer review
workshop on Zoom
In the Writing Forum leading up to the
rough draft, you have:

from different regions of the
world
â— Identified a problem in the
world today
â— Found excellent sources; for
the final paper, sources should
include at least 2 scholarly
peer-reviewed articles from
academic journals and at least
6 course sources. You should
make effective use of them and
cite them accurately
â— Posed a Level 3 question (one
that is arguable, open-ended)
about how your chosen
traditions are of value in
addressing the contemporary
problem
â— Answered your question with a
tentative thesis statement that
makes an argument about how
your chosen traditions are of
value in addressing the
contemporary problem
In your Rough Draft, you’ll build on the
Writing Forum by:
â— Posing a revised question that
addresses how your chosen
course traditions are of value
in addressing a contemporary
problem
â— Answering your question by
considering other views
(counterargument), making an
assertion about the issue
(argument/thesis), and backing
up that assertion with
compelling and logical reasons.
Your question should be
addressed convincingly in a
1000-1250-word (+ Works
Cited) paper.
â— Supporting your answer and
reasons with specific evidence,
based on research and
analysis.

IV. Submission Checklist
Please read all of these Guidelines and
the Final Paper Guidelines carefully.
The Final Paper Guidelines includes
guidelines for the components of the
final paper that will help you write a
strong and well-organized argument.
The MLA Sample Paper, found in the
Writing Project Overview, Guidelines,
and Resources module on your section
Canvas site, will show you how to
format your paper.
I. Assignment Details
This assignment will allow you to put
into action what you’ve been
developing in the Writing Forum. The
more complete your rough draft, the
closer you will be to finishing the
assignment (and the better the
feedback you’ll get from your peers!).
The assignment comprises 4 tasks,
each of which is described below.
1. Write a complete (at minimum)
1000-1250-word (+ Works Cited)
rough draft of your paper in
correct paper formatting, with
complete in-text citations and a
complete, up-to-date list of Works
Cited in MLA format at the end of
the paper. Your paper should
explore how two traditions
covered in this course can be of
value in addressing a
contemporary problem
â—‹ Review the Writing Project
Overview and these
guidelines and read
through the Final Paper
Guidelines. The grading
rubric for the Final Paper
can be used as a checklist
to help you write and edit
your rough draft and to
help you constructively
review your peers’ rough
drafts
â—‹ Use the best possible
sources. Your rough draft

should incorporate at least
4 course sources from the
two traditions you
identified, and must
include at least 2 peerreviewed articles from
academic journals.
○ Review the “Guidelines for
MMW Papers†to verify
correct paper formatting,
etc.
2. Ask your peers for feedback and
give them direction about what
you need and want in terms of
feedback:
â—‹ Write a Dear Reader
Letter to your peer group.
Include it as the first page
of your rough draft (not
counted toward the total
word count). Write it as a
letter, beginning with “Dear
Reader,†and ending by
signing your name. Answer
these questions, beginning
with the strengths of your
draft and ending with any
questions you want your
peers to answer:
â– What are the
strengths of your
draft? What are
the problems or
weaknesses?
â– What challenges
did you encounter
in writing it?
â– What is your
thesis?
â– If you had 2 more
days to write the
draft, where would
you focus your
attention?
â– What questions do
you have about
your draft that you
want to make sure
your readers
answer?

margins of your draft to

where you want particular
help. For example,

Here are some examples of the
types of points you might make in
either your Dear Reader letter or
in your marginal notes (or both):
◠“Gentle Readers: I know
that I need to make a
connection between
Confucian and Islamic
notions of responsibility
and how responsibility is
framed in the Universal
Declaration of Human
Rights, but I haven’t come
up with a convincing

have time to write this
section yet, but this is
where I’m going to use “In
the Time of Sacred Spacesâ€
as evidence to support my
reason about creating a
balanced ecosystem.â€
3. Before the workshop,
read carefully and
comment respectfully and
constructively on your peers’
essays as instructed by your TA
and by the writer in the Dear
Reader letter. Write a Dear Writer
Letter to the writer at the end of
the paper, addressing the
following questions:

the draft? What are the
problems or weaknesses?

about submitting your own draft for
peer review, accessing your peers’
drafts, and participating in the Zoom
workshop. Throughout the process,
engage with your peers in a respectful,
considerate, helpful, collaborative,

the paper in Google Docs. Use the
various annotation tools to make
your marginal comments. Write
your Dear Writer letter at the end
of the paper (if using the Google

comment on the same document.
Review your peers’ rough drafts
before the workshop and be
prepared to discuss your
comments at that time.
3. Participate in the Workshop. Your
TA will create the groups, organize
the meetings, and send you the
Zoom link. Here is the basic
structure of the workshops:
â—‹ Workshops will take place
